Secret email about the Post Office Scandal. Shh!

Horizon trial: Where’s Wally?

Hello

It’s very late so I won’t add much to today’s report, which you can find here.

The transcript came very late today, but you can find it here.

The claimants’ written closing submissions are here.

For completeness, you can read a beautifully formatted thread of today’s live tweets here.

And if you have the time, I would recommend a very interesting blog post written about this Horizon trial and “Robustness and reliability in computer systems” in general.

It can be found here on the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies website. The author very kindly mentions the www.postofficetrial.com blog.

Bugs, errors and defects

I have been told that if some mobile phone users go to any page on www.postofficetrial.com and click on the button at the bottom which says “View web version”, there is a problem.

Instead of switching you out of the optimised mobile format and taking you through to a functioning desktop version of the website, the screen freezes on loading the app crashes.

The gentleman who demonstrated this on his phone says it’s a bug which must only affect certain smartphones with certain browsers. It doesn’t affect my smartphone even tho I was using the same browser he was.

I asked him what he thought the issue was and he told me it was a gremlin in the script that brings up the my twitter feed in the right hand nav bar of the desktop version of the website. Something in it is causing a freeze in the browser as it is loading on certain smartphones. He knows this because when he disabled that element, the screen loaded fine.

Computer bugs, eh…? Let me know if you have the same problem and I’ll investigate.

I’ll be in court 10.30am tomorrow, so I’d better turn in.

Cheers

Nick
